Greetings,

As the final hours of 2011 trickle by and the (Gregorian calendar-reading) world's attention turns to 20 and the 12, so the members of Souvaris also turn our attentions to new things. We're sorry to say that from Saturday 18th February 2012, this band will cease to exist.

We're extremely proud of what we have achieved with SOUVARIS - SOUVARIS SOUVARIS. It's the culmination of over 2 years of work (including a few self-inflicted delays, admittedly) and quite honestly we don't know where to go from here. Our lives are now in such different places to where we began and our energies are diverted into other avenues to the point where it is difficult to get us all in one place, let alone in a position to make more music. So we've decided to stop.

Now into its twelfth year, we never for a moment imagined that this band would come to dominate more than a decade of our lives, playing hundreds (just about) of shows around the UK and Europe, sharing stages with some of our favourite bands and meeting too many of the loveliest people imaginable who we are now proud to call friends. Looking back across the years stretching back to the late months of 2000, we have innumerable fond memories to look back on and share as stories whenever we see each other.

This goes back to include our two former (and founder) members Mike Beevor and David Moult, both of whom are both still dear friends and brothers in arms. The seven of us actually managed to get ourselves into the same room for the first time in memory - twice in the space of a fortnight! - to celebrate the marriages of David S and Simmo in the summer of 2011. Look! Here's a picture, taken by our esteemed friend Romain Didier of Crëvecoeur and Jean-Elliot Senior:

So what do we do now? Well, first we have to persuade you to buy SOUVARIS - SOUVARIS SOUVARIS so that Matt Gringo makes back some of the cash he spunked on getting it pressed. All our relatives got predictably red CD-shaped presents this year. Why didn't yours? BUY BUY BUY. It's our legacy. Our swansong. One last bow. Etc. You get the picture.

The second thing we decided to do was to at least do one last hurrah; or rather ONE LAST GIG before we call time on things. We're still planning various things to put a special evening together for anyone who decides to come, but you can rest assured that it probably won't be like the KLF. Full details will be forthcoming, but we have booked THE SPACE at Nottingham Contemporary for Friday 17th February as the air-infused vacuum in which we will perform our final show. Hey ho chaps and chapettes,

Some obligatory HUGE THANKS to Emma and the lovely blokes from Dear Thief/Gung Ho and Doig and the dudes at Power Lunches for having us at a super-special, super-sweaty London gig the other weekend. We had a hugely enjoyable time playing and seeing lots of faces old and new. If you came out; we salute you.

But now, to business, for this week finally marks the official release of SOUVARIS - SOUVARIS SOUVARIS. Some of these songs took literally months to write, and we first started working on recording the whole thing over 2 years ago and only just managed to finish it this summer, so it's extremely gratifying to have it released by our great friends and still hugely vital Nottingham-loving label Gringo Records. Similarly, in these times of massive cutbacks, record labels and distros dying on their arses and shops going tits-up, it's extremely kind of Cargo to take on a record as uncommercial as ours and stick a few copies in local record shops... if you're lucky enough to live near any that still exist, we implore you to go out and support it by buying AS MANY COPIES AS YOU CAN.

AWAKENING FROM OUR SLUMBER

Hola!

After successfully maintaining radio silence for another extended period over the spring and summer, the behemoth that is THE SOUVARIS finally peeps open an eyelid and stirred at the start of August. After successfully sleeping through the marriage of two of its members and a whole lot of other things going on in everyone's lives, we finally got together and decided: IT'S TIME TO FINISH THE ALBUM.

And guess what? We actually went and did it. Okay, it took Matt Gringo threatening to castrate the lot of us if we couldn't get our act together for an October release, and then the promise of playing with our good friends (who also have their own, incredible, album coming out) Zun Zun Egui if we could get things sorted out in time, but we finally, finally have finished it. And it only took 21 months. Easy.

So, we worked our arses off...

(well, some of us did)

... and a few long days, late nights and good-natured arguments later, we haz dun it and it's finished. THANK GOD FOR THAT.

We're still not dead

Hi folks,

Sorry about the lack of communication of late. We came back from tour in November delirious but exhausted and have promptly disappeared from sight ever since. We need to say a well over due ENORMOUS THANKS and MUCH LOVE to every single person who put us on, put us up, put up with our company, fed us, talked to us, bought something, got drunk or much, much worse things with us on tour. We had an absolute blast and enjoyed ourselves immensely to a man every day. The general consensus was: BEST. TOUR. EVER. We haven't been posting anything since we got back because we've only all managed to be in the same room at the same time a grand total of twice in the last 3 months; unfortunately now we don't all live in each others' pockets or share houses/flats and have to actually work for a living, it's not so easy to get together. Plus, we celebrated the second anniversary of having all our old gear nicked by our practice room space getting flooded by a burst pipe thanks to the freezing weather over the holiday period, so we've had to clear out of there and hole up with our good friends Savoy Grand and Kogumaza. Thankfully not too much got lost in the flood, but if you're lucky enough to own a copy of our first, untitled, 12" - congratulations, that record got a hell of a lot rarer... 90% of our remaining stock got destroyed!

So what does 2011 hold? Well, the first thing for us, apart from starting to practise regularly, is to finally, finally, finally finish our third album. We started recording in November 2009 and have made snail-like progress ever since, but our focus is now razor-sharp, to the exclusion of doing pretty much else. We may play an odd show here or there, but for now we just need to get this thing done and out of our systems so we can get on with our lives. Tentative plans for another tour to coincide with the record's release are being put in place, but don't expect anything until the autumn. Until then, please feel free to email us with any inane questions, dodgy banter or gig requests you may care to pass on.

Hi all,

Thanks to everyone who came out for our tenth birthday! We had an excellent time and really, really enjoyed ourselves. Thanks too to Ed Wood Jr and Fresh Eyes for the Dead Guy, both of whom threatened to blow us off the stage, and to all of you who indulged in munching cake, stomping on balloons and letting off pathetically weak party poppers. Left Lion have written a very kind review of the night here.

But now! We are about to depart these shores for some excitement (and 2,000-odd miles) in the continent, visiting France, Belgium, Switzerland and Germany:

October 2010 Excitement: EUROPEAN TOUR 2010

Ho!

For the fourth time, the lumbering post-rock behemoth known only as "Souvaris" (apart from that time we were billed as "The Savouries", but let's not get into that one...) will plant all four paws firmly onto the continent and belt around Western European for a series of concerts across a few of our favourite places. Here's where we're orf to for our October holidays:

Yup, that's 4 countries in 9 days! And about 3,000-odd kilometres to cover. Our trusty driver Jim "Thing One" Alexander is already in training and licking his lips in anticipation.

...we've just been sleeping. But fret not! Aaron is freshly returned from his jaunt around India, Nepal and god knows where else and we are all finally back in the same city for the first time since January. On the agenda for future activity:

Gigs in September/October. Another European tour. Oh yes.
Practising like motherfuckers for said gigs.
Editing and mixing the elusive third album. Yes, we've been working on this one for months. No, it's not nearly finished yet. Yes, we will probably play exclusively songs from it at gigs. Unless you ask us nicely to play something old that you like.
Frantically trying to remember how to play old songs that people like so that we don't piss everyone off.
Mixtapes! Not sure why, but they'll keep us sane on tour. And we might make some copies for you. Dave has already compiled 5 hours' worth of tat for your dubious listening pleasure.

More soon, including confirmation of aforementioned promised gigs. Anyone want to put us on in London? Or northern Italy?

Millions Now Living Will Die Young In A Cold Dead Spiderland

Recording for our third album, possibly or possibly not titled as above, is almost done. We our now preparing ourselves for six months of experimentation, mixing, mastering, and arguments about gates and compressors.

We're very excited about this record. In the past, give or take a few overdubs and sonic tweaks, our recorded output has largely been the sound of a band playing live in a room. This time we're aiming for something that sounds radically different to previous ventures, so we've decided to take a totally different approach. Each instrument is being tracked individually, giving us a lot more freedom for production tomfoolery. The idea/hope is that the production process will become an integral part of the songwriting process.

It's exciting and yet scary, as we don't know quite what the record will sound like. About all we know so far is that it will feature seven or eight tracks and will be our shortest album by some length. I have high hopes that it will be by far the best thing we have ever released... here's to hoping that we don't fuck it up.

Aaron, meanwhile, continues to thrive on the Indian subcontinent. Our only fear for him is that that upon his return (July) he will want to lay down some tabla overdubs.

However, with our split LP with Sincabeza finally approaching a firm release date (more details when we know them), we though we should drop a quick note to let you know that we will be embarking on the smallest tour ever in a couple of weeks time. TWO whole consecutive shows in two different cities! First up a trip to Manchester, followed by an LP launch party in Nottingham. Crikey!

We're supposed to be getting on with finishing songs for our next album, but we can't stop playing gigs! Our very, very good friends Sincabeza are coming over to the UK for the upteenth time for a short tour, and we're very excited to be playing a few selected shows with them where we can. Souvaris are a 5 piece rock band from Nottingham, UK, comprising of two guitarists, bass, synths and drums. This Autumn will see them release a split with Bordeaux’s excellent art-rockers Sincabeza on Gringo Records.

Taking an ever more direct and succinct approach to songwriting, the band channel their abundant energy in to yet tighter grooves and snappier riffs. Like Tortoise or Battles before them, Souvaris realise that instrumental music need not be po-faced nor grandiose, and that fun can be clever too. Intricate rhythms are complimented by playful yet simple melodies; this is music that is at once minimal and complex, an efficient yet brutally effective use of resources.

Souvaris create a space where your imagination can run riot. Draw your own pictures; write your own words. But keep this as the soundtrack.

Sincabeza is Eric Camara, David Loquier, Philippe Rey and Antoine Vo Van Tao, four veterans of the Bordeaux rock scene. The band began playing together in 2002; initially a causal side-project in between other commitments (David drums for Laetitia Sadler’s Monade), their natural perfectionism and committed work ethic saw them complete a demo by April 2003, soon followed by several high-profile support slots for Explosions in the Sky, Trans Am, Karate, and The Evens. The band have now released two albums, played 200+ shows all over Europe, and are at the forefront of the blossoming French underground scene.

If a frame of reference is needed, Sincabeza's music sits somewhere between the UK bands that Sincabeza have already accompanied both in France and during their two UK tours - Charlottefield, That Fucking Tank, I'm Being Good - and those at the forefront of the American independent /avant-garde rock scene of the present day: Tortoise, Shellac, Golden. Post rock, instrumental rock or noisy pop – whatever; if you ask them, Sincabeza will tell you that genre is not even an issue. The four piece simply play, allowing themselves to follow whatever deconstructed and intricate path they choose - songs full of awkward variations, elaborate arrangements, razor-sharp breaks, and – increasingly – surprisingly poppy melodies. Their music springs in every direction, but you have to see them live to better grasp their explosive and frenetic nature. The quality of musicianship is second to none, and yet the raw, physical energy of their live show threatens to lose control at any moment.

So, the old website is dead and with it a gazillion unnecessary words and whatnot. From this point onwards, this here blog will act as your gateway to Souvaris information. We'll be expanding the Flickr account too so that we can put some more of the literally thousands of photogrpahs we've amassed over the years and you can have a good giggle.

Seeing as we've been going a good few years now, we'll be offering a series of future posts about previous recordings and releases, with links to where you can buy the good shit or just download the old shit for free. It'll maybe give our back catalogue some kind of coherent narrative too, which could be interesting. Or it could be a load of old cobblers. We'll just have to find out together! Good, yeah?

There's also the question of how we publicise when we're playing live. Gigs will posted onto our Myspace and Facebook pages (see links just over here--->), and we'll blog about stuff when we know about it.
